TMW and sun

termo5 smallTMW fades in the sun and eventually becomes gray like any other wood. The following happens: UV destroys the top layer of lignin, mini hair surface cracks appear and surface becomes oxidized. Bacteria from the atmosphere gets into the cracks, as well as protozoa , fungi and other invisible inhabitants that make the board of a gray- silver color. Under this layer the wood retains its natural color, which is easy to check if you just scratch the surface with your fingernail. Also this dullness disappears when soaking.

So, it is an advantage of TMW that changes occur only in the surface layer at a depth of 0.1 - 0.2 mm. These processes do not penetrate deeper into the board, because there is no growth medium for microorganisms.

It is considered that any timber without protective coatings fades and decays outdoors during the year by 0.05-0.1 mm. These changes may become noticeable in 5-6 years. First, the soft lignin decays and solid cellulose remains. The surface is rough. This explains why in Europe wood for outdoor applications often is brushed specially.

termo3 smallIn various designs and under different weather conditions TMW behaves differently: the most severe weather impacts - in open sunny areas and on Southern and South –eastern front facing.

Visual wood surface aging can be avoided with regular maintenance and updating of construction (wood protective means - same as human cosmetics).

As an illustration, we used the photos of common cottages in Kiev. All of them were built in 60 – 70ies, then practically not serviced and at theses examples show clearly all processes of interest , including the difference in coatings behavior depending on the light side.

Thus, the four house fronts depending on the light side will behave differently.

Northern and western sides will stay unchanged for the first 5-7 years or even more.

Southeastern fronts (especially under windy conditions from water reservoir or sea) may require renewal of colors in a year already).

Important: the darker tone of the coating, the longer it will stay unchanged.

At an average degree of insolation (Central Europe) the loss of pigment saturation using natural oils of dark tones – is 10% per year. The wind frontal boards on roofs boarding become faded quicker.

termo2 new-2Prevention and protection of wood

We suggest being skeptical about the promises and guarantees of wood and oil sellers with regard to extremely extended warranty periods and low maintenance cost. Terraces and fronts made of wood on the sunny side need to be renewed every 2-3 years, or even more frequently. In the shade in woods this period may be 5 - 10 years.

When carrying out maintenance works you should considering season, weather and time of the year. For example, in August, the wood has a very low humidity and one must be prepared to increased oil consumption as dry and hot wood absorbs the oil much stronger than during other times.

Protective means can be divided into two categories: expensive and cheap. Logically, the more expensive protection and painting means initially - the more expensive the service will be in the future. But it should be done more rarely. Maintenance cost approximately amounts to $ 8.12 per 1 sq.m.).

The most expensive and high quality protective means include: WOCA, OSMO, BONA, BORMA.

When using cheaper products the primary processing and further operation will not cost much ($ 4-5 per sq.m. ) but renovation frequency will increase.

Let's mention: Remmers, Technos, Tikkurilla, Pinotex, Maxima, Deck Skape (Thompson), ADLER, BELINKA

Before applying the renewal oil layer the boards must be thoroughly cleaned from dust, bird droppings and washed with water or special cleaner. It will dissolve the bio- contamination of the surface, open pores of the wood and allow the oil to soak well.

Important: glossy and polished wood surfaces have a short service life and require undue cost to maintain the original state. That is why, in countries with a tradition of wooden housing, such as Germany, Austria, Northland, U.S. and Canada, the rough boards are often used, and on which paint or oil coating sticks better.

Treatment with resistant polymers or lacquers, in our opinion, reduces the environmental life. Practically, when using polyurethanes or varnishes we turn the natural wood into plastic. I recommend using alkyd and polyurethane varnish on structures located at a distance from places of human habitation, or where it is difficult to serve these elements (roof boarding, pergolas). Such structures as terraces, which are in direct contact with humans and where children play and animals stay should be treated with natural oils.

And now the most important and unexpected :

The most practical way to maintain wood – initially do nothing with it and allow it aging and change over time. Upon proper installation providing ventilation and drying of all structure elements any wood - even an ordinary pine will serve a minimum for 50 years and TMW or other modified wood species life is unlimited.

We provide our constructions with a guarantee from 15 to 30 years
